In 2008, I worked on house price models. I was a small part of a team modeling house prices and eventually, housing crisis solutions. For the house price model, a major part was forecasting the future change in house prices. 

The statistic that measured house price changes was called the House Price Appreciation (HPA). The idea that house prices could only go up was so ingrained in the culture that the statistic to measure changes even assumed it.

Is healthcare recession-proof? 

A job in healthcare was always considered the most stable. Rain or shine, recession or boom, people would always get sick, people would always need care. With an aging population, there would be a growing shortage of care providers. 

In 2018, the healthcare sector outgrew almost every other sector and was projected to grow much faster than the rest of the economy through the next decade. But, with COVID-19, that reality has been shattered. For the first time, medical organizations are forced to face their mortality with staff furloughs and a rapid decline in patient volume.

Thankfully, healthcare organizations are starting to reopen.  Reopening presents an opportunity if done correctly. Rebuilding patient volume will be key to having lasting success.  

COVID-19 caught us all by surprise.  You couldn’t control that, but you can control how you rebuild and plan for the future.
